Drug Charges

The use of, and addiction to, illegal drugs has become a significant problem in the past few decades and has resulted in a sharp escalation in crime, including robbery, shoplifting, and theft. The Maryland legislature has passed a number of statutes that provide severe penalties for the possession, possession with intent to distribute, distribution, and sale of drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and many other narcotic and non-narcotic drugs. Severe penalties are imposed for a conviction of these offenses. A conviction for possession of marijuana is classified as a misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine, one year imprisonment, or both. A conviction for sale or distribution of a narcotic drug, such as heroin or cocaine, is classified as a felony and carries a maximum penalty of a $25,000 fine, 20 years imprisonment, or both.
